The Buick emblem is a piece of American automotive history, easily recognized by its iconic colors and flag formation, though it has undergone many changes through the years. In fact, it’s just past the 120th anniversary of the Buick nameplate, which is why our team at Shea Buick GMC is taking a look at Buick design history. Learn about the meaning and history behind the emblem and test-drive new Buick models, at our dealership.
History of the Buick Emblem
The very first Buick emblem was introduced in 1903. It bore little resemblance to today’s modern style, and instead featured Uncle Sam on a globe. Following years would include just the brand name, in gold, white, or black script on a blue geometric background.
The recognizable flag design was introduced in 1937, and redesigned in 1939. In 1959, drivers saw the first iteration of the red, white, and blue tri-flag design, which lasted until 1975, at which time the logo was changed to an eagle. From 1990 to 2022, the logo was variations of a tri-flag, tri-color design in a circle. In 2022, the logo was reimagined again, with a geometric homage to the original flag design, without the outside circle.
Meaning Behind the Emblem
While the Buick emblem has undergone many changes through the years, one element that never stays away for long is the flags – and for good reason. The flag design was first created as an homage to David Dunbar Buick’s family crest. The original included the Scottish coat of arms for the family, and included icons of a golden buck head, gold cross with a hole in the center, and diagonal checkered banner.
